Lame? Not!
Do you think it’s odd to applaud, when a romantic sip and bite is bathed in the glow of a dentist’s light? When a one-blade fan, looks physically challenged because it can. If a cane chair implores, to cut off its legs so it can sit on the floor.
Put your hands together for the deliciously deformed antiques at Raghuvanshi Mills’ Anemos where surprisingly, a lot of great pieces won't cost you an arm and a leg.
Get Wind of This
Formerly a fan-only store (Anemos is the Greek God of wind), it recently acquired a new mill location as well as antique furniture and trinkets from the store owner’s personal collection. These are apparently sourced from around the world and then restored in Mumbai. Anemos’ fascination with blades is evident; the store’s ceiling is filled with expensive novel fans – a few overwhelming cane ones, some futuristic steel versions that look like space ships and airplane propellers, and others with blades delicately bent to look like flowers. Ignore the standing and table antique fans that could very well be sourced from Chor Bazaar.
Back Down to Earth
Taking up floor space here is a mix of unremarkable artefacts and interesting furniture pieces. bpb loved an art deco teakwood dresser that doubles up as a writing desk (Rs 28,000), a wooden wine casket that can be used as a storage unit (Rs 24,000), a giant rosewood chest with big brass Alice-in-Wonderland-esque key (Rs 1,25,000) and a cane meditation floor chair (Rs 27,000). Sweet tooths, check out the fun (and pricey) abovementioned dentist lights-turned-lamps that start at Rs 55,000. Other curios you might find here include ancient airplane propellers, vintage tool boxes and the metal frame of a tricycle.
If you need a guide, ask for Hetal who’ll take you through the store, explaining the history of every vintage piece and the reasoning behind every contemporary one. After explaining how a chakki came to be a centre table, she proceeded to inform us that the stock at Anemos is updated “every couple of weeks”. So swing by the next time you’re in the neighbourhood, and you might find a new odd for your end.
