What's In Store

What will the ‘S’ in Rocky S stand for this time around, we wondered as we watched a band of labourers put a grand sign board over the designer’s new Bandra shop. Sexy, shimmery, stale, so-not-us?  All of the above, it turns out, as we snuck into the store  two days before it’s slated to open (launches October 22).

Lights, Action

Like most high-end boutiques in Bandra right now, this one seems to be geared for the upcoming holiday-wedding season, with loads of bling and an overpowering desi vibe. Therefore, a long rack of largely unappealing salwar kameezes with net sleeves are the first sightings you’ll make at the store.  Ignore and turn left.

Much better are a fun range of block printed georgette kurtas with aari work, electric blue and forest green tunics in wispy chiffon, and a few cool-ugly ones stamped with digital prints (start at Rs 6,000). Also a good Diwali buy are the pleated kurtas – one eccentric pleat out of place adds a fun quirk - embellished with gota, zari and crochet, which would work nicely as dresses too.  Embossed saris are accompanied by super tight, mid-riff showing brocade blouses (start at Rs 20,000). Bipasha Basu would be proud.

Dress to Go Up

Upstairs, we found a skinny rack hung with a few random dresses and a smattering of men’s wear. It wouldn’t be fair to judge, seeing as how the entire shipment is expected to arrive during the first week of November. But if the shirts are anything to go by – interesting baroque prints and fun stripes – we suggest that you make your boyfriend swing by. The sweeping gowns and short chiffon dresses (start at Rs 5,700), however, are unimaginative and filmy, straight out of a Yash Raj movie. Butt(on) ugly!

Getting there: Rocky S, ground floor, next to China Gate, Waterfield Road, Bandra (W), opens tomorrow, start at Rs 5,500.

Psst...There’s a Bun in the Oven: Speaking of things to expect, Cinnabon will be opening a branch on Carter Road soon (in place of Red Ninja and Olivet Bleu). Bread carefully, weight watchers.
