Jodhaa Bed Linen: Oh Sheet!

Winds of Change

In a tiny new Bandra store that vends booty for your bed, a velvety storm is brewing. Bolts of brocade flash across clouds of crushed silk, bright enough to wake even the most stubborn somnambulist. This sleep shack calls itself Jodhaa, a tiny new garage store (in the space once occupied by Loose Ends) where you’ll have to weather the harshest velvets to eventually find the sun.

There are super-thick throws with busy Moghul patterns, quilted cushions with antique embroidery and appliqué bed spreads that look like they should be swathing a room in Kahani Ghar Ghar Ki. They try to be luxuriant but really come off as tasteless and rather uncomfortable to lean against. We wouldn’t bet our tushy on this cushy.

Here Comes the Sun

But weather the shower of gold and silver tassels and you’ll be rewarded. Sheets will be hung out to dry in colours of the sky and earth. It is at this time, much to the store manager’s disappointment, that we found the subtle booty we’d actually want to take to bed. Ask to see for instance, basic khadi sheets, light floral comforters, pintuck blankets and fun patch work spreads with lines of hand stitching. There are also poufy rolls of quilts in blue and orange with dull gold block prints that would make for fun holiday gifts. Besides this, you’ll find carpets, rugs, table runners, mats and other home linen here.

Jodhaa even has a few sample pieces of wooden bric-a-brac – picture frames and magazine racks – that they plan to start retailing soon.

Don’t Go Soft On Me Now

If you’re looking for the “simple, no-frills sleep” that Murakami writes about, you probably won’t find it at Jodhaa. But a festive fling for your bed, maybe.

Getting there: Jodhaa, in the lane opposite Shoppers Stop, off Linking Road, Bandra (W), call 9821257494, approximately Rs 2,000 for a patchwork bed spread.
