If you're yet to procure an ensemble for your second cousin's brother-in-law's sangeet that your mom's making you go to, swing by Fuschia and Orange, a new Colaba store featuring traditional Indian designs that can perform (at) several wedding functions.

Do I Know Hue?

We walked in expecting a riot of mismatched colour and busy prints, and though there are some of those, it wasn’t diffcult to find some pretties too. While the stock (designed by Chandigrah designer Dimpey Gujral) predominantly features Lucknowi Chikan work, the store also houses a rack of Pakistani designs in the form of long and short kaftans, georgette Patiala salwaar kameezes, handcrafted phulkaris and a couple of dresses that can be avoided.

Now we don't really fancy kaftans but we did spare a moment for the breezy pink and yellow one as well as a short purple version (all priced at Rs 6,000), which would be perfect for half the Mumbai population heading to a Goa wedding this season. Other casual finds that would work well for a Mehendi at home inlcude lemon yellow kurti (Rs 6,500) and simple phulkari kurtas. The formal section houses brightly coloured suits, some slightly over the top, but also an elegant white salwaar kameez dressed up with dull gold embroidery (Rs 25,000). Fuschia and Orange customises according to size and colour preferences too.

Force of Habit

It may not be the hippest store in Colaba, but Fuschia and Orange addresses an urgent need - where to buy a pretty, well-priced salwar-kameez in South Mumbai, or Mumbai for that matter. It also makes you re-contemplate the more pertinent question - why am I going to my second cousin's brother-in-law's sangeet again? As we pondered this, a disgruntled woman on the floor above the store randomly hurled abuses at people on the street. Don't be alarmed, we were told, it happens everyday.  Maybe someone's forcing her to attend a sangeet too.
