Crease Lightning
Much like last night’s October shower, the clothes at Juhu’s new store The Dressing Room took us by surprise, but ultimately left us feeling quite refreshed. The racks which address both ladies and gentlemen, stock hip labels you don't usually see at multi-designer stores and a section of seriously fun Indian clothes. As if on cue, the sky broke into a thunderous applause.
Men, Waist Away
Run by menswear designer Chiraag Dattani, The Dressing Room is a simple white wall-wooden floor store that would rather let the frills (and flowers and folds) creep on to the clothes it stocks. Gentlemen if you’ll divert your attention to the right, you’ll spot a shirt that’s trying to be an inland letter - watercolour blue with red rims and envelope-like pocket. On its left, there are formal shirts by Chiraag (start at Rs 1,800) with fun shoulder detailing - thread work and army-stripes – and on its right, embroidered ones we didn’t care much for. The hand woven waist coats by Mayank and Shraddha made this Scouter recall a ‘Borrow From Your Boyfriend’ piece she read in a fashion rag. And borrow we will, a woolly piece with leather strips and a version where one flap of the vest is a wrap-around scarf. For him and her, indeed! There’s also a bunch of warm coats (see nautical one) designed in-house and not-for-everyone churidaar pants.
Ladies, Tie the Knot
Not surprisingly, more thought has been put into what women want. At this fashion pot luck, designers, many of whom Chiraag scouted out at Fashion Week, bring a nice assortment to the table. Siddharth Aryan gets yum zipper-print leggings, partially sheer, but his grommet-studded tops could use some innovation. Jelin George does poufy, icing coloured shrugs that belong in a pastry case and also fun floral dresses and dragonfly coats with metallic bow-shaped buttons. Special mention for new-on-the-block designer Nikhil Thampi who uses fluffs of net and suede, but ultimately ties things up nice and neat – his white kurta with suede coat can be bought with a knot behind or a cowl in front. There’s also a stunning sari in shades of a thunder cloud that comes with a net skirt, and separate knotted pallu attached to a black tube with brown belt (see photo, Rs 15,000). Wish we had the same love for strangely-sequined RNA dresses, though.
Now bpb isn’t a fan of gowns, much less ones that look like they should be paired with churidaars, so we moved away from 7 Chakras’ dresses and on to the desi section. Here we found cool dhoti pants by Flower Power, elegantly structured red and gold kurtas from Mayank and Shraddha, dupatta dresses and also some regular sets (start at Rs 5,000). The accessories – pricey neck pieces by Shimmer Shack and Valliyan (start at Rs 4,000) and shoes by Veruschka - take a back seat.
The Reel Deal
As we were leaving The Dressing Room, a stylist was packing bales of net into a bag, off to a fashion shoot with one of Nikhil Thampi’s subjects. Visit the store and buy now we say, before these stars are shot and the film, over exposed.
Getting there: The Dressing Room, shop no 2, Fiona Building, Juhu Tara Road, next to Aurus, Juhu, call 65676766, Rs 1,800 for a men’s shirt.
