Is this what it’s like the morning after the gypsies leave? Through a thicket of fairy lights and flowers at new Bandra store Memore, you’ll find all kinds of boho souvenirs from block printed maxis and Tibetan bags to leather pouches and intricate brass door locks. There’s even an Onyx ring, but it comes with no guarantee to ward off evil spirits.
Invasion of Bohemia
Run by product designer Swabhi Mangal and former radio jockey Shruti Bhola, this fashion label for women does an in-house range of apparel with clothes that can be best described as O.M.O meets Mela. No Bangkok clothes at this Bandra shop – we couldn’t believe it either!
bpb found interesting wrap-around sheath they call the Sushi Dress and priced at Rs 2,150, abovementioned block printed maxis (Rs 2,500), solid coloured dresses and flapper tops made out of saris. While we didn’t care much for the random selection of pants, and also the printed cotton tops that could be better finished, co-owner Shruti was there to tell us how we could layer them with a plain tee, just like her suggestion to wear the pretty silk skirts as a bustier dress (see Madras print flair with brocade border). There are also light covers ups that they call ‘AC Jackets’, coats you need to put on in Mumbai when the air-conditioner comes on.
Belle Fanning
A more fun browse is offered courtesy the accessories that the girls source from their vacations in and around India. We walked right past the familiar Goa tourist traps – woolly bags, hippie waist pouches, mirror work totes – to the attractive satin sequined carry-alls and bright orange suede sling. There’s also a treasure trove containing vintage fan and light switches (love these!), intricate brass locks with key, zardosi cushion covers, super small diaries with leather binder, hand-painted wooden parrot mirror and stick-on ceiling flowers.
On your way out, you can pick a roll of hand-made wrapping paper from a basket and have it crafted into a paper lamp. Go towards the light, we say.
Getting there: Memore, shop no 2, Villa Queenie ,16th Road, near Hawaiian Shack, Bandra (W), call 26059851, Rs 2,500 for a maxi dress.
