Vitamin C

The two girls behind Bandra’s new fashion store bigC – one sporting a giant bow on her head, the other wrapped in a bubble gum shawl - seem to wear a mixed expression of apology and annoyance. Spend a few minutes at the store and you’ll know exactly why. Plagued by its Linking Road location that‘s surrounded by tacky street stores, the bigC has a ton of shoppers popping in to use their best and long-practised haggling techniques. But the girls stick a “No Bargaining, Please” sign on the wall, and return to their seats and smiles.

Bangkok Returned

Opened four days ago, bigC (their last name is Chablani) is your typical Bandra boutique - think Izzo -  that comes bearing bounty from Bangkok and Hong Kong, differentiated by what seems to be a fun eye for women’s fashion. Thankfully, there are virtually no lycra dresses and drape-y tops that you usually find at stores of this kind. Instead, bpb saw cute casuals that don’t promise supreme quality, but are mostly priced below Rs 1,000! See product slideshow here.

Naval Base

The cramped space and racks that hold way too many golden hangers make it difficult to browse, so we endured the chaos for you. Start at the left where a legion of tiny skirts stand at attention. Tell the two nautical minis (Rs 895) to step forward, and pair with electric blue or almond white buckled loafers.

Above the skirts you’ll see well-fitting racer backs embellished with strings of pearls, detachable brooches, patchwork flowers (Rs 795) - some of which are pretty. There are also cotton tees with cool-ugly lace work and diaphanous, solid coloured georgette tops that can be teamed with high waist skirts. And in a batch of random dresses, we found a black and white shift with peter pan collar and ripe cherry print frock.

But for every pop coloured flat here, you can also expect to find a tarty stiletto, and for every fun cuff there’s a strange knock off accessory. Lucky you have us, to strain the insane and sift through the shifts. We suggest you visit bigC when you want a fun weekend buy that won’t pinch your pocket.

And remember, don’t trouble the nice ladies for discounts.

Getting there: bigC, shop no 19/20, Crystal Plaza, ground floor, 33rd Road, opposite KFC, off Linking road, Bandra (W), call 26488083, Rs 795 for a top, see slideshow here.
