am also wondering, where can i find a regular baraat band, i.e. not one that consists of brits and starts at rs. 40k?
Saturday, 18 December 2010 18:46
- veena nagda, "mehndi artist to the stars", is at 98204 21717 (although somehow i find the idea of a mehndi artist who shows up with photo albums of bollywood heroine brides rather than actual mehndi samples a bit off-putting...)
- i got a LOT of my clothes made in bandra (rather than town); elco market in particular was AWESOME since it's an entire mall worth of all types of clothing (salwar suits, saris, lehngas, ready-to-wear saris, et al) and at a price range that doesn't make your heart stop beating. i bought from seven'$ (kanchan, 98929 82959) and the miss (don't have a number for them unfortunately, but it's in the same arcade; ask for bunty to help drape stuff on you, he's a genius).
- speaking of which: ready-to-wear saris, oh my god, whattay concept! they're shorter than the usual 9 yards, don't need to be pleated, and can be draped any number of ways.
- totally agree on gaaywadi for cards. i got mine from prince (bhupesh and rakesh are the guys to talk to) @ rs. 16 when another guy at dadyseth agiary road had asked for rs. 25 *for the same design*!!
- for my fiance's reception sherwani we are going to occasions, at marine lines (talk to mr. iqbal). the number is 2209 3688. great selection, very reasonably priced, good quality work, and i understand they make matching jootis as part of the deal.
- we are having a small wedding, so we wanted a guestbook to record well wishes and advice from all our invitees. but i decided i didn't really want a book, so i bought extra paper which matched my wedding invitations, had it cut down to 4x6" notecard size, and had "gyaan for the bride and groom" printed across the top. this way people can use as many pieces of paper as they like and we can sift through them like a deck of cards whenever we want.
- our candid-style photographer, raghuram ashok, is from bangalore. search for him on facebook. we really liked his work -- and he's only 20something himself! in case you want someone local, deepa netto, 97739 24078, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it was our second choice.
- for bangles in any and every colour and size, tiptop point, near c.p. tank/prarthna samaj, 2381 0666, is the place to go. be warned, the shop is long and narrow and can get really crowded.

happy wedding season!

Notes, Ideas, Tips…

# Priyanka Chopras November issue of Vogue India is pretty usefull for picking up overall help with the wedding and the wedding season in general. Worth picking up a copy!
# For decoration, pick flowers in the season to save money!
# Try using balloons, candles & ribbons for a western theme party like a Bachelor/ Bachelorette Party. They are a cost-effective way to turn a simple room into a colourful fantasy.
# Save on money by combining a Mehendi & a Sangeet ! ( I’m doing a Kirtan & Mehendi at the same time-that way we get the ladies and friends to attend and apply mehendi at the same time!)
# Use your friends talents: Is your friend a DJ-Have em spin for your Sangeet or get a friend to do your make-up!
# While photographs are all you are left with, please do ensure that you get quotations from a few photographers before you finalize one. These pics is what you will remember your wedding through!
# While I havn’t tried this, but you might wanna try getting cheaper gifts through E-Bay!

how awesome!! why didnt you post this last year- when I GOT MARRIED! boo hoo
Monday, 06 December 2010 09:15
This is pure awesomeness, thanks a million, takes care of much of what i needed to get through this wedding season. Here are a few additional questions. Some follow ups, some logistical, some personal that i totally trust the SS with! Here goes:

- Where cn i get cool cuff links? needn't be monomgrammed, but just cool stuff- speedometer in one arm and fuel gauge in the other, bikes, guns. PLEASE don't say kenneth cole or something.

-Suggestions for a good venue to host a bachlorette for 20-25 people between town and bandra?

-Gift ideas for an ex boyfriend and very dear friend who is a corporate lawyer by profession, plays the piano like an angel, is a bass guitarist and owns a bullet bike. Don't know that bride incredibly well, but she's pretty cool.

-Is Prateeksha good for draping sarees for vertically and horizontally challenged people? Anyone who can drape at shorter notice?

- Where can i source fab wine which ages well to give as a wedding present (other than the wine society?

- Good place to buy funky silver as a wedding present?

-Suggestions for sentimental verse for dear friends getting married to each other (no gibran or rilke)

-Does anyone do good video montage in mumbai?

-Anyone who can do good old movie posters type photos of the happy couple?

-Lastly- not quite a wedding question - Christmas present ideas for a youngish couple that has it all (really)? (I thought of witty gift boxes already, anything else?)
Sunday, 05 December 2010 18:08
My hubby & I were planning to give Rs. 1100 as a gift to new neighbours at their wedding reception. Do we need to bump up our budget if the couple is having their party @ a venue which charges rs. 2000 pp for food? Also, what if a family of 4 was going for this same event? How much should they be giving?

@Mumbai Central: That's a super list! We've sent you a little something from WittyGift for your contribution. Please check your inbox.

@ Hazel: Please send us your email id so we can send you your wedding freebie too. A gift voucher from a spa or BodyShop type place is probably a good gift to get someone you don't know too well. The WittyGift boxes are actually cool, since they have a number of options to choose from (perfect if you're not sure what the couple will like). Some of them cost Rs 999, which is pretty affordable, plus you'll get a bpb discount!

I have a very practical question regarding attending weddings and something that has stumped me every time i am faced with it. How and what do you gift a not-so-close friend who's getting married?
Friday, 03 December 2010 09:36
A few additions: because you can still be fabulous on a tight budget!
Bachelor/ette Party: Contact Rakesh Todankar at www.foodnfunfiesta.com. He can organize fun Boat Parties , which is where you sail away from the Gateway of India on a Boat replete with a smoking grill, a DJ, a Bartender and your friends, and it's exclusively yours, at least for the two hours or so that you book it for.

Invitations: For a good deal, head to Gaaywadi, just off Girgaum's JSS Road. There's a lane full of invitation sellers - "Prince" is one of the reliable names there. Invites start at Rs. 4 per invite, of course it's bulk purchases only. If you're environmentally conscious or just want to save yourself from the ordeal of sorting through kitsch, try Chimanlal's, Fort, www.chimanlals.com or Bombay Papiere, opp. the Stock Exchange (www.bombaypapiere.com). Chimanlal's won't get stuff printed for you but they have great array of gift bags, cards and designer sheets and envelopes which do quite nicely for a simple wedding invite. BP used paper made from cotton pulp, so it's guilt free extravagance - for a good cause!

Sarees: If you want to go totally traditional, make a prior appointment with Nupur of www.nupurpaithani.com. Check the vivid colours of her Paithanis, choose the Pallu you want and the size (6 or the whole nine yards). She's based in Borivali but had exhibitions all over Mumbai quite often. I got a lovely purple dual shaded nine yard done from her. If you want to go bespoke make sure you go with some time on your hands - freshly woven pieces may take up to 2 months. Not sure of draping issues? Take the Paithani to "Saadighar", around the corner from Dadar Emporium, down the Station Road, Dadar West. They'll stitch up the 9 yard so that you can just slip it on. Easy peasy.

Photography: Contact @josephradhik for some innovative wedding photography. His portfolio was recently on CNN IBN and it's amazing. http://www.josephradhik.com/

Gifts: Next time you're in Matunga for some southie grub, try Chedda Sweets and ask to see their pretty gift baskets. The guys at Chedda can fill them with sweets, chocolates, high quality dried fruits or Pop Tarts and Oreo Cookies, whatever you want. They'll also send it to wherever you need it to go.

The rest is pretty much up to you :) Have a wonderful wedding day!
