Sneak Peek: Pali Village Cafe

Pali
Village Cafe

bpb Sneak Peek! What does Mumbai's prettiest new cafe have in common with an eccentric old lady?

Adorned with rusted wrought iron and exposed walls, heritage tiled-floors and lush green plants, Pali Village Café reminds us of the rambling old house Gwenyth Paltrow shares with her grandmother in the Hollywood version of Great Expectations. This multi-levelled space, with its glassed-in courtyard and art deco balconies, would not only accommodate the wonderfully weird lady in her old wedding dress and single shoe, but also make room for her broken heart. And they’d know how to mend it too: with food that is comforting yet surprising, and sometimes even sublime.

Sneak Peek!

Opening today at 4 pm, bpb scored a sneak peek into this adorable restaurant last night. Lounging at our corner table in the roofed courtyard and sipping on deliciously light Melon Sangria, it was hard to imagine that this hushed space is just a couple of feet away from the chaos of Janata Bar and Restaurant.

Getting into the Mediterranean-villa spirit of the place, we started our meal with watermelon and feta salad, roasted red pepper and jalapeno hummus and chicken skewers, described by head chef Conrad Dsouza as “excellent.” We discovered he was mostly right: the watermelon slices, cold, pickled and nicely offset by the salty feta were perfect for the balmy evening. The chicken was tender and juicy, but we wish it came with a dipping sauce, and that the hummus packed a bigger punch.

Pan Feared Fish

Next in line was thin crust pizza by the slice; the Margherita was just the way we like it – saucy, light and not overwhelmed with cheese. The Goat Cheese with Garlic version, however, was fully-loaded; if you get it, be prepared for a dairy overdose.

Mains of Pan Seared Rawas and Spinach Ricotta ravioli were a bit of a let down. Rawas featured the mashed potatoes and sautéed greens the menu promised, but bore little trace of the madras curry vinaigrette. The ravioli was undercooked and too heavy on the spinach, but bathed in a subtly roasted almond sauce that improved the dish vastly.

Charles, I’m Sure

Owner Suren Joshi insisted we end our evening with the Chocolate Fondant, guaranteeing that “it would give us goose bumps”. It certainly did, this chocolate volcano that spewed bitter-sweet lava with riffs of orange. By the end of our meal, so stuffed were we that asking for seconds almost seemed like a crime. Fittingly Dickensian!

Getting there: Pali Village Cafe, next to Janata Bar and Restaurant, Pali Naka, Bandra (W), call 26050401, opens today at 4 pm, meal for two expected to cost Rs 1,500 (with two glasses of wine).

I'm really surprised at the great reviews PVC has been receiving. We had heard so much about it these past 2 weeks, that we decided to take a look. 1) Nice, quiet ambience 2) Poor, slow service 3) Dirty tables, dirty glasses 4) No accompaniments (bread, sauces) 5) Tacky menu - printouts on paper with spelling errors galore 5) Atrocious food for a place with such hype. The beef & hazelnut butter burger was horrendous - a small, processed slab of beef, almost-stale bun, hazelnut butter that you couldn't taste, dry due to lack of any sauce or butter or cheese (this is perfectly acceptable if the meat is juicy and tender, which it wasn't). The goat's cheese and garlic pizza slice was simply a tiny smear of cheese on crisp, heavy bread. Not a pizza slice by any means. Roast Chicken, Zucchini and Goat's Cheese Sandwich was decent, but lacking the oomph that you always get at an Indigo. Cheese was almost absent, but the chicken was tender. Potato wedges were good. The problem was that it was just so-so. Each bite made you feel fuller rather than yearn for more. Overall, nothing more than a 2 on 5, one point only for the ambience. I wouldn't eat that burger again even if they delivered it to my house for free. I hope this was a one-off, but I doubt it was. I don't think I'd be visiting again.

greatttt ambience !love love love it !
nice, novel menu ,
however , the food could definitely improve ,
waiters were clueless about most items on the menu , as it was only their 1st week ,
3 items ordered never appeared on the table , but managed to make their way on the bill sum how!
ravioli was undercooked as was the pizza base(we had to send it back)
the smoked salmon with capers was good, but the passion sauce tasted nothing like passion fruit.
the stir fry that came with one of the mains was super soggy!
n the sangrias toooooo sweet !
food needs improvement , though would love to go bak there fr the ambiance

EASILY THE NICEST AMBIENCE IN THIS CITY. WOULD RATE IT 8 ON 10 FOR FOOD, 20 ON 10 ON DECOR AND O ON 10 ON SERVICE AND QUALITY OF WAITERS!

THINK I AM GONNA HANG OUT HERE VERY OFTEN!

EXCELLENT steak. Great pizza. Pasta was OK. We were seated in the covered verandah area and it there is a need to improve the lighting and air conditioning there. The rest of the restaurant seem well lit and much cooler. Waiters got us the right food but described it wrong when they got it. Need to differentiate between the artichoke pizza and salad - we ordered the salad were served the pizza. Pizza was good and we were hungry so didn't complain or send it back.

The portions are too small for the prices! We are Indians, we like to eat! The decor and ambience is nice, but the air-conditioning can freeze.

The warm salad of mushrooms bok choy and the smoked salmon are to die for. Three of the main courses we had, came to our table on a base of mashed potato...think the accompaniments could be more imaginative. The crem brulee was to die for and so was the coffee soufle.Dont oyu ever mis the Chocolate Fondant ( the delicate blend of orange and choclate is amazing) i would skip the Ravioli for the Torteliini( its more acceptable to Indian palates)
Loved the decor, detailed yet not in your face.
One last thing guys...napkins and not paper tissues...
Chef Conrad out does him self. Think Suren has a good thing going
