They're sweet and pretty, sure, but haven’t you seen enough? Cupcakes might have been all the rage last year, but it's time for them to go. Who will serve the eviction notice? Could the ice cream sandwich creeping in on new menus, imported from Belgium and poking out of old holes be the true successor (remember how they toppled cupcakes in NYC)? We’ll have to wait and watch. Meanwhile, read bpb’s round-up of yum ice cream sandwiches in Mumbai, plus a D-I-Y recipe we plan to try at home.
Olive Bar & Kitchen: Frozen Peanut Butter Ice Cream Sandwich, Rs 395
This resto-bar’s new menu features among other sweet bombs, a pricey peanut butter ice cream sandwich served between two layers of Devil's Food cake, caramelised banana and caramel sauce. This could be a meal in itself!
Union Park, next to Le Sutra, Khar (W), call 26058229.
Debailleul: Ice Cream Macaroons, Rs 91 each
Two elegant almond paste biscuits and a layer of part-frozen semi-glace raspberry ice cream – never has a three-way been sexier. These ice cream macaroons truly warrant the use of that dessert cliché that makes you cringe – melts in your mouth. Sorry! Other frozen treats at this Belgian patisserie (read full review here) include delicate but decadent ice cream cakes like the Mikado, featuring swirls of caramel parfait, pecan nuts and icy pear coulis.
Debailleul, ground floor, Emca Sadan, Appasaheb Marathe Road, opposite ICICI Bank, Prabhadevi, call 9619487395.
Dinshaw’s: Sandwich Ice Cream, Rs 15
Remember this old-school sandwich, a slab of fuss-free vanilla ice cream closed on both ends with perforated biscuits? Close to extinction, the Dinshaw’s cold ‘wich is available only at select parlors. If you’re lucky. Probably the cheapest, yummiest way to time travel.
Windermere, Oshiwara, Andheri (W), call 9323737337.
K Rustoms: Sandwich Ice Cream, Rs 42
Presided over by a bad-tempered old lady, this little ice cream shop in a shop at Churchgate has been serving up ice cream sandwiches for over 30 years, slabs of chocolate and strawberry ice cream book-ended by thin, waffle cookies. Messy to eat, but these are worth getting your fingers sticky for.

D-I-Y Peanut Butter and Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich, from the New York Times
In a recent edition of her super "A Good Appetite" column, Melissa Clark writes about the ice cream sandwiches of her youth, and also offers recipes for a grown up version, which even us untrained Scouters put together in under ten minutes. Ice cream and bread might seem like a weird combination at first, but it tastes pretty sweet. Or you could use shortbread or butter cookies instead, which ends up being more pudding-like, but still yum. Bon apetit!
