Packing Heat: The Best Food Deliveries
Wednesday, 24 November 2010 20:19

Struck by delivery-envy after reading this recent New York Magazine list, we decided to create our own pecking order, peeking into the phonebooks of Mumbai’s biggest gourmands to scope out super delivery options in each neighborhood. Plus, you can stick this list up on your fridge with cool magnets that we're giving away from Tappu Ki Dukaan. All you have to do to win one is add your favorite delivery place to the comments section of the story.

Marine Drive & Churchgate: Battling the BMC

Mansi Poddar, Secret Scouter at Brown Paper Bag (www.bpbweekend.com) and Marine Drive resident (come on, we had to make an appearance somewhere

The “B Road” Bhel Guy: Before the BMC shooed away all the Marine Drive hawkers, this guy's  stall did the briskest business. He now operates via his cell phone, and will deliver the yummiest bhel – ask for sev puri with less sweet chutney and a portion of plain bhel for when your tongue is burning - straight to your doorstep.

Call 9821827698.

HR Chinese: Formerly a Chinese stall outside HR college, Rajiv's legendary cart - chilli chicken and all - is now parked inside the institution's canteen, but makes personal deliveries as well. Huge quantity for less.

At HR college, Churchgate, delivery in Cufffe Parade, Colaba and Churchgate between 11 am and 8 pm; Rs 70 for chili chicken.

Shiv Sagar: The cheese pav bhaji here is so good that we sometimes send for it all the way from our office at Cuffe Parade. Remember to ask for less butter on your pav, and tell them to pack everything into plastic containers. Clean and fast.

82, Nagin Mahal, next to Café Mocha, Veer Nariman Road, Churchgate, call 22045829, free delivery from Churchgate to Nariman Point between 9 am and midnight, Rs 80 for cheese pav bhaji.

The Pizzeria: Get the 12 inch Bombay Masala, but ask them not to make it too crispy, because that travels terribly. You can even have leftovers for breakfast – just stick the pizza into the oven for 10 minutes.

143, Soona Mahal, outside Jazz By the Bay, Marine Drive, call 22820883, free delivery from Marine Drive to Cuffe Parade between noon and 10.30 pm, Rs 415 for a large Bombay Masala.

Kamling Restaurant: Better than Chopstix across the street, and especially good for greasy spring rolls and hakka noodles. Avoid the Manchurian, which takes on a scary, jelly-like consistency during the ride over.

82, Nagin Mahal, Veer Nariman Road, Churchgate, call 22042618, free delivery in Churchgate between noon and 10.30 pm, Rs 145 for spring rolls.

Rebecca Vaz, owner of Baking Tray and Santacruz (W) resident

Lebanese Point: Chicken shwarma isn’t doused in hummus (so ask for it specially if you want some), but is garnished with a yum garlic sauce. I also like Chip n’ Dip, basically fries with chaat masala. They always send the food fresh, hot and with extra pickles.

Shop no 3, Tanna Kutir, corner of 1st & 7th Road, Khar (W), call 65290303, free delivery from Bandra to Santacruz between noon and 11.30 pm, Rs 80 for a chicken shwarma.

Pronto: They’re not stingy with pizza toppings, and are one of the few places to offer bacon, which I love. Single-meals are good value for money – char grilled chicken steak is accompanied by sides of mashed potatoes, buttered boiled vegetables and garlic bread. It has too much mustard, though, so ask them to tone it down.

Andheri (West): Two Many Cooks?

Vicky Ratnani, head chef at Aurus and Andheri (W) resident.

Chawla ka Dhaba: You can’t go wrong with the food here, but if I had to pick I would choose tandoori chicken and dal makhani. Remember to tip the delivery boys well, because they are polite even on the busiest days.

Indigo Café: Even though it’s bulky, the BBQ chicken burger travels really well, with sides of potato wedges and red cabbage coleslaw neatly packed in separate containers.

Clifton Trishool Housing Society, Oshiwara Village, Link Road, Lokhandwala, Andheri (W), call 26335709, free delivery in Andheri (W) between 11 am and 11 pm, Rs 388 for a BBQ chicken burger.

Shaheen Peerbhai of www.purplefoodie.com and the Purple Foodie Catering Service, Andheri (W) resident

Jaffer Bhai’s Delhi Darbar: This is more of a delivery place than an actual sit-down restaurant, which is why their delivery service is impeccable – fast and clean. I love the chicken biryani.

Shop no 6 & 7, Rendevous Building, Ravi Raj Oberoi Complex, off New Link Road, SAB TV Lane, Andheri (W), call 26321370, free delivery in Andheri (W) between noon and midnight, Rs 135 for chicken biryani.

Trishna: Everyone orders seafood (the butter pepper prawns are yum), but I suggest you be a little experimental and try the truly superior chicken makhani and also appams, which never stick to their banana leaves even after travel and delivery.

Goregoan East: Treats from the Far East

Kshitij Morarka, partner at Mumbai Deli and Goregaon (E) resident

Pallavi Restaurant: Magnificently oily and served with yoghurt and green chutney, their sabudana cutlets are not for the faint hearted! Tip: quick re-heating on a tawa or in the oven ensures crispness.

Below MTNL Telephone Exchange, Gokuldham, Goregaon (E), call 28495599, free delivery in Goregoan (E) between 11 am and 11.45 pm, Rs 30 for sabudana vada.

Pratha Restaurant: One of the best North Indian restaurants this side of town. I love paneer tikka masala. Rotis from the restaurant are usually soggy on delivery, so I suggest you make those at home.

Near Dindoshi Bus Depot, A K Vaidya Marg, Filmcity Road, Goregaon (E), call 65191884, free delivery in Goregoan (E), Rs 115 forpaneer tikka masala.

Lucky: Chicken biryani is amazing, succulent chicken pieces in quality long grain rice, with just the right amount of spices. Remember to order in advance, as delivery can take time.

Goregaon Mulund Link Road, ahead of Durian Estate, Goregaon (E), call 65003651, free home delivery in Goregoan between noon and 11 pm, Rs 120 for chicken biryani.

Royal Challenge: This is one of the oldest restaurants in the neighbourhood, with consistently good food and insanely rich methi mattar in creamy gravy. The prices are a bit steep.

Royal Challenge Complex, Film City Road, Goregaon (E), call 28400208, free delivery in Goregoan (E) between noon and 11 pm, Rs 175 for methi mattar malai.

Ruchi Fast Food Corner: Our dosa and pav bhaji place. Dosas are perfectly crisp, and sent over with coconut chutney and a tangy sambhar. Ask for more chutney!

Bhavani Sweets: This is a roadside stall so the hygiene element is zero, but sometimes I can’t resist samosa pav, a unique blend of a crunchy potato samosa, spicy green chutney and sweet tamarind chutney between bread.

Gokuldham Shopping Centre, Krishna Kruti Apartment, Goregoan (E), call 28492949, free delivery in Goregoan (E) between 8 am and 8 pm, Rs 8 for a samosa pav.

Healthy soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps ... They also serve pasta on request. The drinks are passable, but the cold salads are a very good option for delivery. Grt option for lunch when in office or even otherwise.

For some reason we seem to have missed out Candies in Bandra. Get anything from Indian khana, to chindian fare, to yum rolls and burgers delivered to your doorstep (in bandra). And then there is Khaane Khaas opposite Pals fish corner. For some yum (albeit oily) mughlai fare.

For Malad (W), the best delivery option is Little Italy's Thin Crust Pizza

Or Paneer Lahori from Kareem's for the days you are craving rich Indian food!
Thursday, 25 November 2010 11:45
It's all good if you live in an area packed with restaurants. Now purely residential Malabar Hill/Napean Sea Road/Breach Candy is a challenge.

1) Santosh Sagar (Matru Ashish, 23631199): Masala Pav + Idli + pizza (yes). Don't go for the dosa, it's a soggy mess. They have delivery till 1 am!

2) 210 degrees C (Matru Ashish, 65249279): I was skeptical about a place that serves eggless desserts but gosh, the dark chocolate croissant heated up is divine. The KitKat pastry, the fresh strawberry jam and chocolate fudge pastry are also great. The cupcakes are not, though. Minimum order for delivery is Rs200.

3) Rahul Paneerwala (Teen batti, 9967931704): Tuitions were never the same without a this neighborhood staple. The Paneer roll and aloo tikki roll... yum! Delivers in less than 30 minutes and they're piping hot.

Seems like you have forgotten Vile Parle completely...
Not many options but definitely few to make you dial the phone when hungry

1) Tosa - Just the right amount of spiciness for the Indian palate in their Penne Arabiatta. Yummy Bluebeery cheesecake to top that up..

Also serves authentic Gujarati and Rajasthani cuisine.. And a few Punjabi dishes like Chole bhature - my favourite..

Eastern Court Building, Junction Parleshwar & Tejpal Road
Vile Parle East, Mumbai, Maharashtra 400057
022 26103310

2) Purepur Kolhapur

This one's a non-vegetarian heaven.. The Chicken masala thali is a must.. and do taste the mutton pickle..
Thursday, 25 November 2010 10:17
How can you forget Jai Hind at Lower Parel? :-)

Highly recommend the Tandoori pomfret (you can pick between a red or green marinade), prawn pulao, Neer dosas, and Pulimunchi.
Thursday, 25 November 2010 09:32
1. 5 Spice, near Asiatic Library: They deliver all the way from the restaurant to my place in Grant Road, which other restaurants in that area refuse to do. Add to that the huge portion sizes, and we have a winner! :)
Phone: 22666435, 22666434, 22664543, 22691257

2. Mama Mia (Pizza & stuff), near Opera House: They've recently moved to a place closer to Hughes Road, a little beyond French Bridge. Very nice thin crust pizzas with lots of toppings (more than most pizza delivery places) & very fast delivery, though it slows down during rush hours.
Phone: 23684900, 23642263, 66207659, 66211474

3. Vasant Bhuvan, Lamington Road: This is a typical Udipi place, so may not really count on this list! But pretty good (Udipi-style) Punjabi food which is not tooooo oily, and quick delivery. Does just fine in a pinch.
Phone: 23821953, 66132016

I can hazz magnets plzz? :D
Thursday, 25 November 2010 09:14
