Losing My
Religion

Pastry paradise would have been lost if it weren't for the heavenly Oreo brownies here.

1-800-NIRVANA

We were introduced to Chocolate Is My Religion by a true believer, one who exalted the glories of this home bakery’s eggless brownie bites in hushed, reverent tones. “They’re heavenly, the best I’ve ever had,” she promised. Sold, we put our money where her mouth was and ordered in a whole bunch of desserts, preparing for a trip to pastry paradise.

Paradise Lost

One peek inside the bakery box, and our faith began to waver. Chocolate cups were filled with what seemed like semi-set Jello rather than the orange mousse we were promised, éclairs were squishy, Tiramisu pasty and bland.

Redemption, however, came in the form of seriously awesome Oreo brownies and a stack of cookies we hadn’t ordered. Moist, gooey, and studded with chunks of bittersweet chocolate, these were an unasked-for blessing that salvaged our day.

A Mousse Bouche? Not!

Unfortunately, the orange mousse tasted as lackluster as it looked, as did cups filled with over-caffeinated tiramisu. These were molded out of rich, nicely bitter chocolate, but quickly disintegrated in the heat; five minutes out of the fridge, and the whole dessert had collapsed into a quivery glob. Not pleasant.

The éclairs fared better, a pleasant mouthful of choux pastry, chocolate frosting and custard. But in this city of a thousand bakeries, you can find better, and without going through the trouble of ordering a day in advance and arranging your own pick-up.

Final Verdict

All in all, the desserts from Chocolate Is My Religion are not bad – and their cookies and brownies are to die for. But Sneha Suchde, the self-taught baker behind this newly launched enterprise needs to take more care with her presentation, making sure the mousse is set, sending clients maintenance instructions when necessary, and generally remembering that ultimately, God lies in the details.

Getting there: 25 Belle View, 85 Warden Road, opposite Tata Gardens. Call Sneha Suchde at 9819776342 or visit the Facebook group here, Rs 70 for a dozen mini éclairs.

Her cookie cups, double chocolate chewy cookies and Oreo brownies are a direct link to heaven. Called in the morning and was able to pickup the order in the evening.
