London's Pizza Metro Pizza Is Here!

Walking around Bandra can yield some pretty strange sights, but even in this neighborhood it's not everyday that you come upon a dapper British gentleman, clad in carefully creased shorts and drawing on a long wall, muttering out loud and pausing periodically to gaze at his handiwork.

He was perfectly polite when interrupted, though, welcoming us into the large, under-construction street-level space at Ambedkar Road (formerly occupied by Club IX and then Mosate) that is shaping up into a branch of Pizza Metro Pizza, a British pizza parlor set to open here at the end of July. The parlor has two outlets in London and sells pizza by the meter, as well as salads and pasta. You can view the full menu here

Currently, the space is decorated with bright terra cotta tiles and naked bulbs, with the above-mentioned mural sketched out on one wall. The mural, our new friend tells us, is to be the same as those in the sister restaurants, which he drew as well and now has been sent to India to replicate. When finished, it will feature a busy market scene from Naples, with Mount Vesuvius looming in the background. There is also talk of a wood fire oven, set up in an open kitchen on one side of the restaurant.

In true Bandra style, Pizza Metro Pizza has not only an expat connection but a possible Bollywood link as well: rumour has it that Juhi Chawla is one of the main partners in the Mumbai branch. Cheesy? Undeniably. But also delicious, we hope.

Getting there: Ground floor, Jharna Apartments, Ambedkar Road, Bandra (W).

I started off loving Pizza Metro Pizza. I'd get cravings for it, and send my poor boyfriend off into the night to bring it home so we could be American by watching spy tv serials and eating pizza at the same time. The toppings were unusual, and the taste was fantastic...not the thick, greasy Dominoes-style fare that has dominated the Indian pizza market thus far (I'm a foodie, can you tell?). But last night was the nail in the coffin for us. We booked a table only to find we had been placed near the bathroom and the door to the kitchen. The manager/owner/whatever, a slight Indian woman with a North American accent, was unhelpful in finding us another spot. When we finally did move, about 40 minutes later I realised that the waiter still hadn't brought over my fresh lime soda, despite serving my boyfriend his glass of wine 25 minutes earlier.
And then the food began! The bruschetta was okay...too little basil, and the cherry tomatoes really should have been chopped in fours and not twos. And then the pizza...it was great. Also loved the aubergine parmagiana. BUT a vegetarian friend had ordered a pasta dish for herself, and it still hadn't arrived by the time we were done our pizza. It turns out that the waiter simply forgot to place the order, and was hardly apologetic, which is the same with the manager/owner/whatever with the big attitude. She offered us some dessert, and we placed our orders (after she huffed about being tired about holding the dessert tray while we made our choices...get a trolley if it's so much of a hassle). The desserts looked promising, but guess what? 20 minutes later, there was no sign of them. "Ooopsie!". The manager/owner/whatever had forgotten about our order again. I can't believe these people charge a mandatory service charge for such crappy service. After arguing, we got the dessert and the pasta off the bill. The entitled, attitudey behaviour of the staff ruined what would have been a perfectly lovely evening. I feel like we were treated worse because we were of Indian origin and not like the foreigners in the restaurant. What went from one of my favourite spots has now become a place I will never go to again (I'm probably not welcome anyway, and afraid that the attitudey manager/owner/whatever will spit in my food). Just because she has an American accent doesn't mean she can treat Indians like shit.
