Bandra's New Nature's Basket
Tuesday, 18 August 2009 13:18

If Truman Capote’s Holly Golightly went to Nature’s Basket’s newest outlet at Bandra, she wouldn’t have to eat Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She also wouldn’t put shoes in her refrigerator or drink milk out of wine glasses. For the delicious goodies, well laid out merchandise and organised aisles at this supermarket/delicatessen/boulangerie/patessserie can turn the wildest wanton, and her dysfunctional kitchen, into a homely hub.

Nature’s Basket makes you want to do the groceries. But if you’ve been to their other outlets at Warden Road, Lokhandwala, Powai and beyond, you’ll know that here, domesticity comes at a price. From exotic cheeses and meats, imported chips and dips, to international ice creams and organic veggies, Nature’s Basket’s shelves are packed with wholesome and yummy, but marked with steep price tags. But by just standing here, in the midst of all its sights and smells, staring at the dessert casement, you feel good. Just like when you peer into a sparkly Tiffany's window.

We dropped in on the first day – August 17 – and were surprised that the store had no promotional offers to mark its grand opening. Judging by the number of Bandra hipsters that had already gathered there, though, the management must have known that freebies weren’t required to attract clued-in customers.

Bpb’s tried-and-tested top 5 at Nature’s Basket:

The Fine Cheese Co’s herb and cheese crackers: Rs 335 for 150 gms. We especially loved the arty packaging.

Hoffman Hot Pepper Cheese: Rs 350. They let you try this one at the store, so you know exactly what you are buying into.

Bundaberg Ginger Beer:  Rs 150 per pint. We know, you’d rather have regular beer, but this one’s good for a change.

Jamie Oliver’s sun dried tomato and red onion Posh Bread Spread: Rs 270. Ideal quick snack fixer for when you’re sandwiched between meetings.

Taco Dinner Kit (12 Taco shells, sauce and seasoning mix): Rs 225. If you’re not the type who wants to start dinner from scratch.

PS- The dessert shelf looked great too. They have Parsi Dairy Kulfi!

Deli Round Up: The coming of Nature’s Basket inspired us to call the others and see what new stuff they have stocked up:

Sante, Pali Nakka, Bandra (W): Pepper ham from Germany and goat cheese with herbs from Amsterdam.

Tabrez’s home delivery deli service: Leg from lamb from Australia, new meat pates, and Dutch Edam. Call 9870044199. bpb subscribers get an exclusive deal!

How to get there: Nature’s Basket, next to C’est La Vie, Hill Road, Bandra (W). Call 26425050. Home delivery in Bandra (W) and Khar (W).
