Tsking at Your Tummy

Ever been subjected to paunch prejudice? Well your stomach won’t be discriminated against at Bandra’s new Yogurtbay, whose fun launch campaign states that “everybelly’s welcome”, from the 'Item Number' flat belly to the 'Family Business' tum. See appendix here.

Serving frozen yogurt that’s apparently 99% fat-free, co-owner Robin Chatterjee says the flavours, as sinful as some of them sound, make for stress-free dessert that’s built for all shapes and doesn't pack on the pounds. Let's hope his lips don’t lie.

Fruitfilment

The skinny takeaway shop at Carter Road, with floor cushion scattered on the steps outside, is immediate respite from the new-in-town March heat. Not just because of the frozen treats they cart, but also the cool beach mural that's splashed over one wall of the parlour.

We visited on opening day to get the real scoop on Yogurtbay: They sell five standard varieties – mango, chocolate, banana, watermelon and strawberry - and one exotic version that rotates daily, with a whole tray of sinful toppings. It won't be long before you figure out that this parlour scores over Bandra's Fro Yo and Cocoberry yogurt spots thanks to a more imaginative list of flavours and a well-perfected formula that results in creamy dessert invoking fresh fruit rather than a synthetic-y taste.

bpb started with mango (topped with fresh alphonso cubes) and chocolate (with a sprinkling of almond flakes), two flavours that Chatterjee feels “they’ve really perfected”. We agree. The apple tart yogurt dusted with cinnamon and the cheesecake version with crumbly biscuit and warm blueberry coulis were truly gorgeous, as will be the spicy chocolate, rose coconut and others from the rotating list, we imagine. Besides these premium flavours, there are also signature recipes like Jack Sparrow and Strawbella, a pretty pink pile of yogurt, candyfloss and biscuit. Yesterday's launch saw the two sweet boys behind this establishment manning the counter, charming the ladies, measuring cup sizes and reminding us that there were also yogurt shakes to be tried. Will the smooth operators continue? We certainly hope so.

In the Lick of Time

The first thousand people to visit Yogurtbay get a cup of yum on the house. No need to call in any flavours.

Getting there: 11 Gagangiri, Off Carter Road, next to Crepe Station Cafe Bandra (W), call 30629191 or visit www.yogurtbay.com, Rs 35 to Rs 180, depending on the portion, no home delivery.
