What were they thinking?
This was a recurring question during our visit to The Terrace, a new Marine Drive resto-bar, asked initially in half-jest as we climbed four flights of hot, cramped stairs and then again more insistently, when we got a load of the huge neon Taurus Mutual Fund hoarding that serves as the space’s primary source of lighting, bathing everything in an eerie X Files-like glow. The extraterrestrial theme is further enhanced by futuristic bean bags and gleaming white bar stools, along with the fact that on the night we visited, The Terrace was as deserted as the cornfields UFOs typically land in (to be fair, it was a Monday night). All the hustle here is borrowed from the view, a top shot of the chaotic golawallas and balloon sellers at Chowpatty beach and mess of cars that is Bachelors.
Mulder Over This
But, back to the original question: What were they thinking? We asked it again as we sipped on a mango Caprioska, allegedly made with fresh fruit but which tasted suspiciously canned. It did, however, have a gratifying amount of alcohol, just like a watermelon Margarita, a half-and-half mixture of tequila and juice.
Food For Thought
Like all the other restaurants on that stretch, The Terrace only serves vegetarian bar snacks. Baby potatoes tossed in chilli sauce hit the spot nicely and tiny mushroom and leek tartlets, warm and smothered in cheese, are passable. Stay away from the mini pizzas, though, crisp pita squares piled high with zucchini, artichokes and peppers, topped with a thick slice of plastic cheese, and doused in olive oil. “It’s our version of pizza,” a waiter told us proudly. The question arises again. We hate to repeat ourselves, but do you really blame us for asking?
Final Credits
Rooftop bar with a great view, down the road from where we live, more affordable than the Dome – we really wanted to believe in The Terrace. But unfortunately, like Scully and Mulder would say, the truth is out there. And in this case, it ain’t pretty.
Getting there: The Terrace, Ikxia rooftop, next to Cafe Coffee Day, Chowpatty, Marine Drive, call 9821241733, Rs 1,700 for two drinks and bar snacks.
