Waiting in the wings, ready to replace Firangi Paani at Linking Road, Bandra is a new Japanese restaurant called Azuma, which plans to give you access to sushi at reasonable rates. Global Fusion across the street, get ready for competition.
Behind Azuma is Ringchen Angchuk, an entrepreneur who used to import Japanese ingredients for five star hotels like the Taj, Grand Hyatt and The Four Seasons, Mumbai. “Having dealt with some of the best Japanese joints in the city, I know how expensive this cuisine can be,” he says, explaining the idea behind an affordable Japanese eatery. He also revealed that Chef Jayant, formerly at Prive, will be the restaurant’s executive chef.
Azuma will feature traditional bamboo mat-covered floor seating, where you can order ramen and sashimi, and sake imported from Japan. Those who aren’t comfortable with the floor arrangement can opt for standard tables (how boring!) or grab a seat at the sushi bar with live counters. Raw-some!
Slated to open at the end of August.
Getting there: Azuma, level 2, Kenilworth Shopping Arcade, Linking Road, Bandra (W).
