Priya Gonsalves, self-taught freestyle dancer uses the internet to get you into the groove.

She moves like a Goddess, and has managed to make a career out of it. Priya Gonsalves, self-taught freestyle dancer and instructor spends her working days exploring the limitless possibilities of urban dance. She’s been practising her moves at night clubs across Mumbai, which in her opinion is one of the few avenues of free non-commercial dance expression.

Priya takes off to New York every time she needs a new stage, but this month, she’s on her way to Paris to attend a house dance conference. You definitely want to be her when you grow up! Priya helps you get your groove on:

The Styles: Most people are familiar with just hip hop dance, because that’s what they see in videos. In reality, urban dance encapsulates a number of different styles — old school hip hop, new style hip hop, B- boying, house, popping, locking, waacking and more. Check out this street dance festival in France.

The Vibe: Freestyle dance is about free expression. The dancer’s style, personality and energy are more important than the technicality. Be original! View this freestyle battle to see how spontaneity plays a big role.

The Gear: No bling please. I think dressing like a rapper when you aren’t one is NOT cool! The most crucial part of a dancer’s wardrobe is the shoes. My favourite’s are High Tops.

The Music: Expand your knowledge of music; add influential artists from different eras and genres to your playlist. Get some funk, deep house, motown. Remember, good music = good dancing. Download soulful deep house mixes here.

The Classes: Check out our Urban Dance Class in Mumbai, and watch our videos at here and here.
