bpb Review: Bargain Book Hut
Monday, 13 February 2012 10:17

Located in the winding lane beside Joss at Kala Ghoda, Bargain Book Hut reminds us of the charming book shop Hugh Grant runs in Notting Hill; only here, chances are that you’ll step on your letter half’s feet at least once before falling in love. The space is tiny, but jam-packed with books at deeply discounted prices. Sigh.

This Counts

Launched barely a week ago along with the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, Bargain Book Hut, with its scattering of chairs and long shelves (the idea of a café was rejected due to lack of space) has already become a neighborhood favorite. It is owned by Wilco Publishing House, a major distributor for international books in India, and stocks an eclectic mix of fiction, health, design, cooking, home and garden titles. Since Wilco works primarily with children’s books, this section is particularly large, and they have some coffee table selections as well - we couldn’t resist Iran, a gigantic three-book set for Rs 8,000 (originally Rs 27,000).

Got Your Bag

The stock here is on rotation, replaced with new titles every week. So if you do spot an interesting book (or crook), we advise that you pick them up right away. Here’s what we went home with:

Ogilvy on Advertising - We have never seen this book on discount before, Rs 350 (originally Rs 795).

Chamber’s Large Print Dictionary for Partially Sighted & Dyslexic Readers- When you can’t be bothered to look for those spectacles, Rs 299 (originally Rs 795).

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain and The True Story of Amulet by E. Nesbit (two book set) – For old time’s sake and Rs 39.

The New 1000 Places To See Before You Die – A New York Times bestseller, Rs 399 (originally Rs 1,300).

The New Big Book of Logos – Love letters for Rs 399 (originally Rs 995).

Getting there: ITTS House, ground floor, 33 Sri Sai Baba Marg, Kalaghoda, Joss restaurant lane, 22041421 or visit the website here.
