Our constant Bandra complaint is that the suburb barely features any art events. If you’ve had the same grouse, get out of bed this Saturday to attend Bombay Art Morning. While the event name might be a tad ambitious for its tiny host space at the Serigraph Studio, it still promises to be fun. Usually, the Studio ties up with a bunch of Indian painters to create exclusive serigraphs of their art works under each artist’s supervision. Bombay Art Morning will feature a limited edition art viewing of serigraphs by artists like Sakti Burman, SH Raza and Jogen Choudhary. In addition, there will be cutting chai, vada pao and other dabbawallah inspired food for morning attendees.
So the early bird does get the worm.
Getting there: On Saturday, January 12 from 11 am to 5 pm, at The Serigraph Studio, #1 Sunbeam Apartments, Perry Cross Road, Bandra (W), 11 am to 5 pm, call 9820425666 for details, free entry.

It’s the perfect weather to watch dastangoi storytellers at the Carter Road amphitheatre or a live music performance at the Gateway of India. The Kabir Festival Mumbai is back (January 9 to 13) with a bundle of poetry and songs and stories, and all of it is free!
While you can expect the usual Parvathi Baul routine, there’s also a bunch of cool dastangoi performers that we’re looking forward to watching. There’s Ankit Chadha, professional storyteller who has lectured at several platforms and institutions including TEDx, NIFT and NSD; and Ashish Paliwal, voiceover artist who has lent his voice to BBC and Nat Geo productions.
Among the music performances, see Vedanth and Bindhu, who combine Carnatic and Hindustani style of singing with the guitar. Also, interesting could be a performance at a bookstore - Lakshman Das Baul and Vedanth Bhardwaj live at Kitab Khana, Fort. In addition to music and stories, there’s a whole bunch of award-winning documentary film screenings that explore religion, philosophy, politics and culture through Kabir.
Free couplet entry.
Getting there: The Kabir Festival Mumbai, visit www.thekabirfest.com, multiple venues, see schedule here, January 9 to 13, free entry on a first come first serve basis.

It isn’t often that events in Mumbai start at midnight. And that alone should be a good reason to attend Miko Kuro’s Midnight Tea Party.
An international 12-hour experiment that revolves around time, technology and art, and inspired by the intricate rituals of the Japanese tea ceremony, comes to Mumbai this weekend. Seattle-based conceptual artist Natasha Marin is the force behind this event, which brings together a group of artists exhibiting their piece within a time frame, while the audience or ‘guests’ aren’t just mere watchers, but participants, given specific roles to play within these performance pieces by (g)hostess Miko Kuro, embodied by Natasha herself.
And what is the purpose of this event? Natasha believes that it explores how art and poetry transform "through collaboration and ritual", and each artist gets involved out of sheer curiosity or intrigue, camaraderie or a sense of adventure. “Anyone who loves experimental art, or who doesn't mind hanging out and interacting with cool artists and theatre professionals is welcome to participate!" says Namrata Bhawnani of Visual Disobedience, who's putting together the event.
Be In Your Element
The first event took place in 2008, after which Natasha has been taking her elaborate art-meets-tea experiment to communities in Greece, China, France and Canada, where the last Midnight Tea event took place for a full 24 hours. The 12-hour Mumbai experiment, which will host 12 local, as well as American and Canadian artists (called The Mumbai 12), will start at midnight at Tao Art Gallery, Worli on December 22, and then move on to Lakeeren Art Gallery in Colaba the next day, December 23 (see the time cycles here). The event will be divided into four three-hour cycles named after the natural elements: fire, water (where only women participate), earth and air. To RSVP, you will have to fill out a survey and commit to either a three-hour cycle or six hours, or for the complete event.
Some of the artists to watch out for are Shree Joglekar and Sammy Chien, who will create a video and sound art installation from their respective remote locations (they won't be physically present); another video installation on the history of indigo farmers by visual artist Shelly Jyoti; videographer Zac Buschmohle, who will also be documenting the entire event; poet and performer James Cagney, who will be conducting interviews with the guests and the Mumbai 12; and playwright and performer Rachael Ferguson, who will explore voice, race, and performance through “a post-colonial lens”. There will of course, be tea, served by chai sommelier Snigdha Binjola of TeaTrunk.com
If you can’t participate, attend the event live streaming at Tao between 12 am and 3 am at The Last Ship in Khar (W). If you are participating, though, you'll be expected to move around, sing, talk and do fun stuff, so make sure you have 12 hours worth of caffeine.
Getting there: Tao Gallery, 165, The View, Dr Annie Besant Road, Worli on December 22, and Lakeeren Gallery, 6/18,Grants Building, second floor, Arthur Bunder Road, opposite Basillico Restaurant, Colaba on December 23, see the full schedule here, for more details, visit the Facebook page here, the blog, the event website or visualdisobedience.com
