st+art: Old Bakeries Turn Into Galleries

st+art: Old Bakeries Turn Into Galleries

Promenades will turn into cinema halls. Up above the streets, artists from Portugal and Italy will scale tall walls to start on elaborate murals. Old bakeries will turn into ephemeral art galleries. And all this while, we watch the oven, waiting for the art to swell, the movement to rise, and move through the streets.

(B)rush hour comes to Mumbai with st+art Mumbai (November 7-30), a street art festival that first started out in Delhi early this year. At the time, the festival’s creative director Hanif Kureshi (previously at Wieden+Kennedy and also founder of Handpainted Type) had told bpb how st+art Delhi was almost a product of Extension Khirki, Delhi’s first street art festival that took place nearly two years ago. “A bunch of friends catching up in Shahpurjat to paint some walls, one from Germany, one from Taiwan, one from Delhi and so on.”

Daku & Tyler Join the Club

st+art Mumbai will feature 20 artists from all over the world, including graffiti artists like Tyler (who takes his name from Tyler Durden in Fight Club), whose famous ‘Never forget the world is yours. Terms and conditions apply’ graffiti you’ve probably seen at Pali Hill opposite Learners Academy school. There’s also the art bandit Daku, and Ranjith Dahiya who has been doing giant Bollywood murals all over Bandra under the Bollywood Art Project (BAP).

Of the international phalanx of artists look out for the stunning works of German street artist DOME; the ghostly white characters of Rotterdam artist Botlek; and the dizzying typography of Germany’s Tofu. See full list of artists here.

The walls that will double up as canvases are primarily in Bandra, including Pali’s BMC School, Pali Village, Mount Mary steps, Hill Road, and then there are also a few walls at Versova Metro Station.

Bring Your Own Brush: How You Can Participate

You can volunteer either as an artist or crew member, to accompany

and assist the artists during their visit, as well as help them paint. Post the festival, two pop up street art exhibits will be held at Kala Ghoda and St Jude Bakery in Bandra.

Art + bread. We can palette that.

Getting there: st+art Mumbai from November 7-30, visit, view their Facebook page here, to volunteer email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
