Kala Raksha Exhibit: Love You So Kutch?
Tuesday, 20 September 2011 23:20

At the edge of Kala Ghoda, on a corner up a flight of stairs, in a sun-filled room with a view, undulate peacocks who don't have to paint their own eggs and much-loved lactating camels.

Green Eggs and Wham

Housed on thick tea-cosies and stitched onto blankets, these beasts wear there pedigree of Kutch proudly, displaying signature styles including mirror-work and use of bright colours. They have been brought to Mumbai by NGO Kala Raksha, which as the name suggests, is an organisation that works with artisans to preserve and market their craft.

Rug the Wrong Way

Unfortunately, the collection currently displayed is limited and somewhat uninspired, where a handful of designs are regurgitated onto different products - the above mentioned tea cosies and blankets, along with some wall hangings and stuffed animals. We did, however, spot a fun wide belt festooned with tigers.

Go if you're in the neighbourhood with some time to kill, or are specifically looking for a baby blanket - because for idle browsers, this is just too tame an animal.

Getting there: "WOMEN WISE: Fabricated Sayings of Kutch", The Artists’ Center, Ador House, Kala Ghoda, until 25 September, Rs 300 for a tea cozy.
