Product Pick: Pop Vulture Board Game
Tuesday, 12 February 2013 17:10

The good folks at Pop Vulture understand your need to stay ahead of the game. Which is why, after extensive research, which we're guessing involved throwing darts (how does a gaming office operate, anyway?), they have launched Pop Vulture, a desi board game version of Cranium. This team (they recommend at least 3 people at one time), task led game is based on movies, music, television shows and other Indian pop culture references, and tests your ability to mime, draw and act.

One of the cards in the game for instance, would need you to mime 'Mere paas maa hai' or hum the tune of Made in India. So basically, this game will make you more aware of irrelevant details from the '90s and '80s (Baba Sehgal and Road Rash, ring a bell?). You can order the game online, they deliver across India. At Rs 850 (shipping extra), Pop Vulture could be a fun, well-priced party starter. It does not however, help you make new 'frandships', as Pop Vulture politely points out. Alright, we stand warned.

Thursday, 07 February 2013 15:27

What: Pero flagship store in Meharchand Market, check out the Facebook page here, Rs 11,000 for a calf length dress.

Why: bpb scoop! We’ve long been fan girls of Aneeth Arora’s pretty, floaty dresses, but dreaded the thought of schlepping all the way out to her studio to see the full collection. Now she plans to come closer home with her first store, opening in Meharchand Market in the next couple of months. Expect to see natural fabrics, floral prints and a riot of color from her new collections when you manage to muslin your way in!

When: You have a Pero-shaped figure. Store slated to open in a few months.

What: Days-of-the-week panty set, buy online at www.prettysecrets.com, a pack of 7 cost Rs 999.

Why: Our pick for the week is the set of 7 panties brought to us by the very thoughtful people from Pretty Secrets. What's special about these you ask? They have Manic Mondays and Tricky Tuesdays, Wild Wednesdays (amen!), Sexy Saturdays and Soulful Sundays - we like Stay In Bed Sundays better.

When: You want a new kind of Sunday best.

IsthatSoap: Lather Delightful!
Wednesday, 06 February 2013 18:20

Is that a doughnut or are you just eating my toiletries? Started a few months ago, Isthatsoap fashions soap bars into whimsical shapes and designs. We particularly like a doughnut shaped soap, lemony handguns and a sad little bandaged heart which we're itching to hold in our hands. A venture started by Supriya Bhasin, this one is strictly for those living in Delhi-NCR.

These glycerin based soaps use food colours which make them safe for use, we have been promised. You can even ask the good folks at Isthatsoap to fashion a soap of your design. They recently got a request for a Fight Club soap - we guess that's one way to raise the bar. Ordering here is super simple - you pick a design and once made, your bars will be delivered to you with cash picked up on delivery. They also do gift hampers, in case you have a smelly friend's birthday coming up!

Getting There: Visit their Facebook page to place an order. Rs 250 approximately, for a bar of soap.

Border & Fall: Pretty Persuasion
Thursday, 31 January 2013 09:11

Loom Large

Elegance  +  meticulous  +  vintage  +  dreamer  +  craft    +  sensory

These are the keywords used to describe the wardrobe of a mother of two, supported by delicious visuals of wedding photos and pearls, four poster beds and family heirlooms.

Finally, a pretty Indian fashion website to browse, Border & Fall launched early last week, with photographers’ thoughts, fashion editors’ voices, women’s wardrobes and one girl with a moustache. Stubble upon?  While we think they could have launched with a site that’s more populated, there’s still enough matter on here for a lunch break browse.

Break On Through

Founded by Malika Kashyap  who has worked with Filippa K (Montreal/NY), Tommy Hilfiger (India), Bombay Electric and Le Mill,  Border &  Fall hopes to “democratize content on fashion in India that is filtered, relevant and community centric.”

Currently, you can walk into En Inde creative director’s Nairobi-inspired wardrobe – a beautiful reminder that you can never have enough black and white clothes. Steal a shiny something and proceed to the study, where you can peek into the journals of Vogue fashion features director Bandana Tewari and photographer Manou, who write about the Journal’s first theme, ‘break’. And then finally in the newsroom, you’ll find a round-up of what’s happening in the fashion industry from different print and web sources.

Also, while wandering the halls of this home, prepare to bump into fashionable people in fashionable spaces. Take for instance, photographer Prarthna Singh – a bpb favourite – and stylist Nikhil D. This, the People & Spaces column with its attractive pictures, could have done with more engaging text, we thought.

Contribute & Collaborate

At Border & Fall, they’d love for you to contribute – send in photos of your closet, a friend with a lovely closet, a fashionable friend  recently out of the closet; people profile suggestions; ideas on how you can collaborate with them.

We have a suggestion: How about a curated closet full of hard-to-find-in-stores things that readers can buy off the website? It should give Border & Fall a little more heart. And cart.

Raw Mango Exhibition: Blank Slate
Sunday, 27 January 2013 22:06

We’ve raved about Raw Mango before—if there’s anything that will willingly get us into a sari, it’s Sanjay Garg’s gorgeous collection of silks and designs. Which is why we were very excited to hear about a new line he’s doing in collaboration with Delhi Crafts Council and Lota, the Crafts Museum shop.

Called Berang, the collection features dyes made out of charcoal and indigo, and it’s the first time Raw Mango isn’t doing colours, said Sanjay, when we spoke to him on the phone. The saris feature block prints and are inspired by jamdani saris from Calcutta. Plus, they’re reasonably priced, starting at about Rs 7,000, so you won’t break the bank.

The collection will be on display and for sale for three days at the Crafts Museum, after which, selected items will be on sale at Good Earth and at Raw Mango’s Chhatarpur studio.

We particularly liked this gorgeous white sari, simple and thick, and long-sleeved indigo blouses that you can also team with skinny jeans. Yes, pleat!

Getting there: From January 30 to February 2, 11 am to 7 pm, Crafts Museum, Pragati Maidan, call 23371887, Rs 11,000 for a sari.

Kona Pop Up Shop In Jor Bagh
Friday, 25 January 2013 11:41

What: KONA pop-up shop, 1 Jor Bagh Market, visit the Facebook page here or see http://thekonapopup.wordpress.com/.

Why: KONA had their first exhibit in Jor Bagh last weekend, but if you missed that, here’s another one: a fun shop-of-wonders with mad products sourced from engineers, artists and architects from all over the country. We love this Sahil & Sarthak woven chair, the tribute to Sachin poster by Mumbai-based Sanket Avlani and Parul Panthri's eclectic lamp. KONA is the perfect place to pick up a gift for your friend who has everything. Or, you know, us.

When: Be a pop (t)art on February 1-3, 11 am to 7 pm.

Product Pick: Napkin Swans
Thursday, 24 January 2013 09:43

If Bjork is your favourite swan, this flock will come a close second: Crafted to look like origami birds, these ceramic swans hold pretty napkin fans for your dinner table, and can be found at the very cute Propshop24.in, a new(ish) website that offers everything from spaghetti towers to scissors with eyes.

We picked these mostly because we've just moved into a new place (hooray!) and can picture them on our very grown-up dining table, hobnobbing with Africa-inspired printed dinner plates.

Swan Lake recital?

Getting there: Isis dinner plates and napkin swans from Propshop24.in, Rs 1,800 for 4 and Rs 1,450 for 6 respectively.

Jivjeet Singh: House of Couture
Tuesday, 22 January 2013 16:57

There's nothing more thrilling than a well dressed man. Except a well dressed man who reads. Oh well, that's a fantasy for another day. Jivjeet Singh, an erstwhile banker, can (ad)dress the first of your desires, ladies. And gentlemen, you should prepare to meet your maker.

Purely Fabricated

The recently launched Jivjeet Singh: House of Couture is a bespoke tailoring service for men. While we’re as sick of the overused term ‘bespoke’ as you are, we were quite taken with his USP: intense detailing, which means carefully designed lapels, cuffs, sleeves and even a suit pocket.

Targeting young, corporate India, House of Couture plans to be a "one-stop-shop" (another term we're tired of) for men's formal wear. From suit material to design ideas, everything will be taken care of here - all you need to do is show up for your appointment, and maybe suck your stomach in a bit.

Jivjeet promises us a new line of linen suits, pocket squares, cufflinks and socks in the coming months. Sew far, sew good.

Getting There: By appointment only. FF-106, Moulsary Arcade, DLF Phase-3, Gurgaon, call 9818621624, Rs.11,000 (approximately) for a suit.
