Take heart, all ye little green men and women – the wheels of progress are turning: Planet Green Bikes allows you to rent bicycles at nominal rates from various metro stations around Delhi, providing an eco-friendly and economical alternative to petrol and diesel vehicles.

All Geared Up

Planet Green Bikes offers a fleet of bicycles (separate for men and women) that are currently available for rent at the BRT Corridors at Ambedkar Nagar, Sheikh Sarai, Siri Fort, Chirag Dilli and Moolchand between 8 am and 8 pm for as low as Rs 10 for 4 hours. Cycles can be returned at any of the five stands, not just the one they were rented from.

Founder Sudhir Haryal plans to make these available directly at Metro Stations soon, instead of just at the BRTs closest to them. And at least 20 more metro station cycle centers are scheduled to open for business as early as next month, once they receive permission from the MCD to begin operations.

Wheely Clever Cards to Play

Regular users can download an application off their website or request over the counter, to score a membership card for as little as Rs 100 a year. That way, you can flash your card and rent, park and return bikes at any cycle shelter without worrying about security deposits, ID proofs or long lines.

Fly by night

Possibly one inconvenience to consider is that the cycle shelters close at 8 pm, while metro lines are functional as late as 11:30 pm. And failure to return a borrowed bike before the shelter shuts for the night results in a Rs 100 night fee. Then again, with fuel prices at what they are, that’s a bargain.
