Task Around Me: Errand Brockovich
Monday, 04 February 2013 17:51

You're looking around a room filled with cartons and wondering why you don't work on your biceps when you have the time. You're still staring at the door willing for someone to come in to help with the heavy lifting. How about just log on to Task Around Me?

From Dawn To Task

Started a few months ago, Task Around Me connects people looking to outsource everyday tasks and errands, to those who can execute the same. Are you well suited and listening? The portal allows both, people seeking someone to do a task and those wishing to earn money with tasks, to connect.

Efficiently designed, the website allows you to post a task description. You can choose to pay through a variety of safe options. Runners will respond to your task description and you must interact with them, using the detailed safety guidelines (a feature we like a lot!) the site describes. Runners bid on your task, and you can pick a runner whose bid/offer you find fair.

Similarly, if you have a service to offer, you sign up with them and wait until you find a request that matches your specifications. It all sounds so organized, we suspect these guys have a hand in running the Universe as well. Once the service is complete, you log in your feedback with them for future reference.

The Errand Of Our Ways

From hiring someone for dusting your shelves (yes, we said it, let's all move on) to heavy lifters, temporary drivers, holiday party help, packers and unpackers- these guys have a solution to all your problems. We tried posting to see if we could get someone to wake us up for work every day, as well. Errand Brockovich, please stand up.

You Tuk Tuk: Au-Towed
Friday, 11 January 2013 21:25

You TukTuk is a new dial-a-ride service that sends out auto rickshaws to clients in Noida, which feature fixed by-the-metre fares, vetted drivers, and a system where you can rate your ride. And the best part is that they plan on expanding to other parts of Delhi soon.

Rick-sy Business

After a string of bad experiences with some very rude Meru Cab drivers, we particularly like the idea of the rating system, which allow customers to log feedback with the company in real time. Here's how it works: all autos come equipped a phone and a unique code which you are given at the beginning of the journey. Once you reach your destination, you punch in your code into the phone, add your fare, and a rating of your experience.

Of course, these are more expensive than regular autos, requiring customers to pay a Rs 20 minimum fare as well as a Rs 10 convenience charge. On the other hand, for the luxury of an auto waiting at our doorstep, we’d probably pay double that. Add drivers (who get personal stories on the Facebook page) that have been verified for safety and an upcoming night service, and we're sold. Scoot over, would you?

Getting there: Call 0120-6488488 from 8 am to 7.30 pm, Rs 20 minimum charge.

Clipped App: Summarized News
Friday, 11 January 2013 10:06

What: Clipped app for iPhone and Android + plug in, download on http://clipped.me, free.

Why: This new app + plug in by US based child genius (don’t you just hate them!) 15 year-old Tanay Tandon, uses an algorithim that can convert web pages and documents into bullet points. bpb found that while this works great on news stories, they still haven’t quite figured out the key word system in feature stories yet. Still, it’s super useful for when you’re on the go with lots to read and little time to spare. Don’t believe us? See testimonials on Tanay’s website, one from “that kid in my Spanish class”. Study hall of fame!

When: You want to byte the bullet.

bpb's Guide To A Balcony Garden: Eden This Or That
Wednesday, 28 November 2012 18:59

If you, like us, pine for a garden of your own but don't have more than a sliver of terrace, plumb this list, where we’ve sourced the best ways to get yourself a green spot in an apartment. Grassy!

Nurseries

Begin with the basics. Where to go to score some magic seeds.

Greenz, The Garden Shop: Ignore the hostile owner and go straight for the exotic herbs, sprinklers and expert garden equipment. 72, Bhogal Road, Jangpura, call 9811008937, Rs. 150 for rosemary.

Garden Guru: This online Bangalore-based shop sells all sorts of veggie seeds from broccoli to bok choy, gherkins and asparagus. Visit www.gardenguru.in, Rs 45 for watermelon seeds.

Upavan: This Gurgaon nursery specialises in balcony gardens. With an excellent selection of cacti and bottle grown plants, these look pretty and need very little care. Just don’t sit on one by mistake. C Block, Sushant Lok, Phase I, Gurgaon, call 0124-4110371.

Masjid Nursery:  Recommended to us by the sous chef at Smokehouse Grill, this is where Hanisha Singh buys the seeds for her own potted herb garden. There's also tall bamboo and baby bonsais, and all the equipment you need to start up a balcony garden - plant stands, earthen pots, potting soil, organic manure, seeds and saplings. Plus, they do home delivery! Pandara Road, 23381808, seed sachets for various herbs priced between Rs 100 and Rs 150.

Rajdhani Nursery: With a pretty website and eco friendly packaging, these guys offer to help you find the perfect flowers for a present or a treat. There’s even a tea room to rest after you’ve had a browse through their show garden. Jor Bagh Road, call 9899620900, or visit www.rajdhaninursery.com, Rs 45 for potted petunia.

Pots & Planters

Looking pretty is half the battle won. Here’s where you can score some pretty pots and hanging planters

Potter’s Lane:  Look for the blue painted colourful pots on the side of the road, and don’t be afraid to bargain. The potter’s guild here is almost 50 years old. They have terracotta, clay and ceramic pots that they source from Kolkatta and Rajasthan. Press Enclave Road, Saket.

Kingschest: This website sells pretty brass planters with fleur de lis embellishments. Classier than ceramic, we think. Buy online here, Rs 1,274.

Accessories

Gardening isn’t any fun unless you have some sexed up tools to do the work with. Get your maali on with these tools.

Ankur Nurseries: This Mumbai-based store has an online shop with all sorts of pretty gardening accessories, including a blue plastic watering can we loved and pretty fiberglass pots. Visit www.ankurnursery.com, Rs. 100 for good luck bamboo.

Ferns & Petals: A whole range of gardening products, from a shower (illustrated with the picture of a laughing woman in her bikini) to a box of silver tools. We particularly like the gardening gloves, blue and green striped and practical, so you won’t ruin your nails.  Buy here online, Rs 799.

Resources

If you need some more hand holding, here are some excellent options

Geek Gardener: Chock-full of helpful tips from where to score fertilizer to how to properly grow rosemary, plus a bustling forum section where other terrace gardening enthusiasts chat.

Gardening and Greens: This 181 member Facebook group is a good place to show off a freshly bloomed plant, but is also useful for exchanging notes on identifying plants, curing plant diseases, tips and so on.

Green Somethings: Give them a call and someone from the team will come over to help you make your balcony garden a thing of beauty, without you having to lift a finger. They also do theme based makeovers.  Visit www.greensomethings.com.

Plants vs. Zombies

Unconfident of your green thumb? Here are a couple of recommendations of plants that just won’t die.

Ficus Benjamina: It ain't needy and will be there literally through dark and sunny days.

Bonsais: They're hardy, apparently and hey, good things come in small packages.

Christmas Trees: One of the nursery owners told us to try these out, and just in time for the holidays!

Around The Village: November 28 to December 4
Tuesday, 27 November 2012 18:57

Anaikka: The label’s atelier store is now open, but by appointment only. Check out their Facebook page here for a look at their collections, and don’t be afraid to ask for customizations. Full review out soon! 13A, HKV, call 9711924472.

Lucky Diner Dilli (we speculate that the Rs 100 prices couldn’t pay the rent) is now closed, leaving only a mural on the wall.

De Villa had a sign up saying it was closed for renovation a while ago, but now the whole building is being torn down with only a sheet to cover it.

Kunzum is having a fundraiser party with Passports with Purpose and Expedia. At the event, high tea, freebies and a lucky draw. Plus everyone who attends gets free membership to Club Kunzum. November 28, T49, HKV, call 9650702777, you can also make an online donation here.
