Kamini Aunty: A (Pig) Tale of Yore
Wednesday, 16 January 2013 16:23

Once upon a time, there was a fair princess, whose mane concern was her hair. Her beautiful locks needed taking care of, and she sent us a plea for help. Being the knights in shining armour that we are (sometimes), we rode our chariots into the night—and across South Delhi--to look for an answer.

Knot a Joke

Having searched far and wide, we found a secret coven where there were magical potions and brews, all of which promised to save the princess's hair. We trudged up the second floor apartment to find Kamini Aunty's Parlour. This was a parlour in the French, spider to the fly sense of the word. Not more than her drawing room, she'd had it converted into a working salon with three chairs. After waiting for our turn on the couch, we were summoned to one of the three chairs for a treatment or a spa. To be sure our fair maiden did not wander into unchartered territory we volunteered ourselves for a spa. And it was magical indeed.

Kamini Aunty's happy helpers, a gaggle of young women, first massaged our hair with a special oil. All products, we learned, were made in-house with secret ingredients. Being nosy, we kept popping up our heads with questions: but this was no place for inquisitive natures - in order to address your hair-raising issues, you had to put your trust in Aunty.

In Her Layer

After the massage, they slapped some hair mask on to our locks. We swore we could smell some yoghurt and Fuller's earth, and were smug at having cracked the secret ingredients. A warm hair wash and a soft blow dry later, our tresses were ready. Swishing our hair around in front of the mirror, we spotted several certificates and medals for aunty, as well as many “Thank you!” framed notes. If it was good enough for the kingdom, it was good enough for our princess.

On our way out, we were offered take-home brews, including Aunty’s special Keshika, which only people who had had hair treatments there could buy. We were also strongly cautioned against fakes.

To be honest, we weren't listening-  our agenda had been fulfilled. The Princess's hair was safe, and order had been restored.

Getting There: A-2/88, Safdarjung Enclave,  call 26108971, 26173702 for directions and an appointment, approximately Rs 1,200 for a hair spa.
